Do You Know Your Local Hospital’s Grade?

Posted on: November 14th, 2016 by Romanucci & Blandin

When you have a medical emergency or need to go to the hospital, do you ever think twice about which one to go to?  You might be surprised to learn that not all hospitals are on the same level when it comes to patient health and safety.

Over 200,000 deaths each year in hospitals are avoidable and by choosing the right hospital in your area, you can minimize the risk of any of these incidents. Unfortunately, many of the medical errors that lead to death or injuries in these hospitals could have easily been prevented.  Accountability for hospitals is an issue, which is why groups like Leapfrog are doing their best to look at hospitals and inform the public about what is and isn’t acceptable during a hospital stay.

Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is a non-profit organization that evaluates and grades hospitals around the country by taking things like patient safety, accidents, medical errors and the resulting injuries into account.  Leapfrog performs these evaluations twice a year and in the Chicago area, fourteen hospitals have gotten a straight A ranking since the beginning of these evaluations in 2013.  Chicago-area hospitals that have consistently gotten A’s include:

  • University of Chicago Medicine
  • Rush University Medical Center
  • Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center
  • Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital

While Illinois had no hospitals with an F ranking, a few did get a D grade which raises some troubling concerns.  Hospitals that get a D or F grade have a much higher risk of injury, infection, or even death due to medical errors.  In fact, compared to an A hospital your risk of death goes up by almost 50% at a D or F hospital.  Hospitals in Chicago that received a D grade include:

  • Roseland Community Hospital
  • Mercy Hospital and Medical Center
  • University of Illinois Hospital
  • Loretto Hospital

It’s important to keep in mind that even with these grading systems, a hospital with a good grade can still have deadly medical errors.  Do your homework when choosing a hospital so you pick the safest one possible.  If you have been mistreated by a hospital and its staff or experienced any other type of medical malpractice, you should contact the attorneys at Romanucci & Blandin.  They have extensive experience in these matters and will work hard to take care of you.
