Landmark NCAA Wrongful Death Settlement Can Lead To More Change & Safer Practices

Posted on: September 7th, 2016 by Romanucci & Blandin

On August 5th, 2016, the NCAA reached a settlement with the family of Derek Sheely, a college football player who died from a head injury sustained during practice. While the $1.2 million dollar settlement amount is significant, the consequences of this agreement are especially monumental and can hopefully start to bring about change in the college sports arena.

In recent years, the tragic extent of brain injuries in sports like football has gotten a large amount of publicity.  NFL players are speaking out about their experiences and studies have shown that 96% of former players have some kind of sign of brain injury. Unfortunately, the risks are higher for players at the high school and college level because they do not have access to the same resources that NFL teams do.

This settlement is incredibly important because it acknowledges that there is a major health issue when it comes to injuries. The NCAA can no longer turn a blind eye to unsafe practices that can lead to permanent damage. It will hopefully spur NCAA colleges to begin monitoring the health and wellness of their students and work with their players to make sure injuries are handled in a safe and timely manner.
