Valsartan recalled by FDA for impurity, NDMA

In July 2018, the FDA alerted doctors and patients of several drugs with the ingredient valsartan, used to treat high blood pressure. An impurity was found called NDMA (N-nitrosodimethylamine), commonly found in recalled drugs and products. While not all products with valsartan have been recalled, NDMA is a “probable human carcinogen,” classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is a substance that may cause cancer, based on lab results.

At Romanucci and Blandin, we are currently investigating valsartan lawsuits. If you or a loved one have taken valsartan blood pressure medication and have been diagnosed with tumors, cancer, or liver disease, contact us today.

Valsartan lawsuits

Various drug companies have pulled their drugs containing the active ingredient valsartan, used for high blood pressure and as a heart medication, due to its potential risk of contamination. These companies and their drug investigation include:

You can learn more about the specific drugs being recalled through the FDA’s Valsartan Recall list.

Valsartan, the generic ingredient of Diovan, may have been contaminated with the dangerous chemical NDMA if it was produced in Hetero Labs Limited from India or Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceuticals in China.

According to Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research,“We have carefully assessed the valsartan-containing medications sold in the United States, and we’ve found that the valsartan sold by these specific companies does not meet our safety standards. This is why we’ve asked these companies to take immediate action to protect patients.”

The FDA states that they will continue to investigate this problem and will report more information when it’s confirmed. Additionally, the FDA

“encourages patients and health care professionals to report any adverse reaction to the FDA’s MedWatch program.”

What should I do if I take a drug containing valsartan?

The FDA stresses that you should not stop taking your medication without consulting with your doctor first. The risks of stopping a medication abruptly without being prescribed a replacement drug is greater than the potential risk of NDMA exposure. Contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible to discuss other medication options.

What are the symptoms of NDMA exposure?

Overexposure of the harmful chemical N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) includes: nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain or cramps, fever and headaches, reduced lung, kidney, and liver function, and dizziness.

Why is NDMA harmful?

NDMA is a known carcinogen, previously used to produce rocket fuel, softeners for copolymers, and as a lubricant additive.
