$1,310,000 Settlement – Unreasonable Force by Police

A settlement was reached on behalf of our client who was a patient in the Emergency Room of Englewood Hospital in Englewood, NJ, and his 62-year-old mother who was accompanying him. The hospital informed the plaintiffs that they wished to transfer the patient to another hospital for treatment. When they expressed a desire to continue treatment at Englewood Hospital, the Hospital staff called security and the Englewood Police to assist with the transfer. Allegedly, police officers threw the patients mother to the ground and beat her son after he was handcuffed -- an attack that was captured on surveillance video. Our client suffered facial lacerations (8-10 stitches), a broken nose, a concussion, and broken ribs. Furthermore, his mother claimed emotional distress. Our case charged that the police used excessive force, and that the officers were not properly trained to de-escalate situations involving emotionally distressed persons such as our plaintiffs.
