A former Dallas police officer will have to pay nearly $100 million to the family of a man she killed six years ago after entering the wrong apartment, a federal jury decided Wednesday.

Amber Guyger, a White officer who is serving a 10-year sentence for the murder, used excessive force against 26-year-old Botham Jean, a Black man, and violated his constitutional rights, the jury decided at the close of a three-day civil trial held in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. She is required to pay $98.6 million in compensatory damages to Jean’s estate and Jean’s parents, Allison Jean and Bertrum Jean.
