NorthShore agrees to pay $35 million to settle malpractice suit

After a three-week trial, NorthShore University HealthSystem and one of its former doctors have agreed to pay $35 million to settle a malpractice lawsuit claiming negligence resulted in a girl's birth injury in 2015.

The trial centered on the conduct of Dr. Fabio Ortega, who was also recently convicted of felony sexual assault in a separate case and lost his medical license. He has not worked at NorthShore since 2017.

In the malpractice suit, Ortega was accused of negligence when delivering two premature twins in 2015, which resulted in one developing cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that affects motor and developmental skills. That's according to a statement from law firm Romanucci & Blandin, which represented the parents of the now-7-year-old girl.
