Legal team for family of Tyre Nichols has one word for Governor of Tennessee: "Shame."
MEMPHIS, Tenn. –– The family of Tyre Nichols is deeply troubled by Tennessee Governor Lee's signing of a new law that repeals critical police reforms - particularly recent ordinances passed in Memphis as the community's steps of progress following the brutal beating of Tyre by Memphis Police officers. Tyre's parents, RowVaughn and Rodney Wells were treated with disrespect by the legislation's sponsors as this bill progressed in recent months. The family also called on the Governor to meet with them and consider postponing or amending the bill to keep public safety reforms related to Tyre's death.
The legal team for the family of Tyre Nichols has just one reaction to the Governor's decision to sign the bill into law:
"SHAME."
The law nullifies ordinances passed in Memphis in response to Tyre Nichols’ death. The ordinances passed were:
- Data Transparency Act: Requires that traffic data is published in real-time every month and that officers collect that data during traffic stops.
- Tyre Nichols Driving Equality Act: Prevents the 5 most common pretextual stops from being used as a 1st violation by police to pull someone over. This bill was named after Tyre Nichols because a pretextual stop led to his death.
-
Unmarked car usage: Requires that unmarked cars not be used for traffic stops.
